What is child protection?
Every five minutes, a child dies as a result of violence. An estimated 120 million girls and 73 million boys have been victims of sexual violence, and almost one billion children are subjected to physical punishment on a regular basis.(EndViolence.org)
Child protection is defined as measures and structures to prevent and respond to abuse, neglect exploitation and violence against children.
ChildFund Alliance and child protection
Child protection lies at the heart of our work. If children are not protected against abuse, neglect, exploitation and abuse, our programs to provide them with education, healthcare, good nutrition and skills will be far less effective.
It is critical that when children are at risk or have suffered abuse or violence they have access to people and places that will offer protection and redress.
In September 2015, the United Nations unanimously adopted Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which frames the global agenda for the next 15 years. ChildFund Alliance played a key role in positioning a stand-alone target on violence against children in the Agenda: End abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against and torture of children (SDG target 16.2).
We are a founding member of the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children. The Partnership will bring together stakeholders from across the world to end all forms of violence against children, turning the belief that no violence against children is justifiable and all violence is preventable into a compelling agenda for action.
