SDGs & Targets

After several years of consultation and negotiation, the United Nations unanimously adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in September 2015. The SDGs are a set of universal goals and targets that frames the global agenda for the next 15 years. They are unprecedented in their ambition. They seek to eliminate rather than reduce key development challenges. The SDGs were developed through an inclusive process that incorporated the views of people around the world, including young people.

The SDGs include the following targets addressing violence against children:

E SDG goals icons individual rgb 16 16.2 End abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against and torture of children.
16.9 Provide birth registration.
E SDG goals icons individual rgb 04 4.a Provide safe, inclusive, non-violent and effective learning environments for all.
E SDG goals icons individual rgb 05 5.2 Eliminate all forms of violence against girls, including trafficking, and sexual and other types of exploitation.
5.3 Eliminate all harmful practices such as child, early and forced marriage, and female genital mutilation.
E SDG goals icons individual rgb 08 8.7 Secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labor, including recruitment and use of child soldiers, and by 2025 end child labor in “all its forms.”
