WeWorld in Syria

WeWorld has been present in Syria since 2011, initially implementing education initiatives for Iraqi refugees in Aleppo.

Since 2014, with the intensification of the conflict, we have provided humanitarian assistance and implemented water and education projects in Aleppo, Damascus, and Deir-ez-Zor. WeWorld is focused on supporting internal evacuees and returnees, girls and boys aged between 5 and 17 years, people with disability, and children with special needs.

Currently, the spaces for educational activities are insufficient and cannot accommodate all the students. WeWorld rehabilitates existing infrastructure and installs prefabricated classrooms, which have been designed to be inclusive and accessible in terms of gender and disability. All classrooms are equipped with school supplies.

The war also caused a severe shortage of teachers and those who have remained have to cope with overcrowded classrooms and traumatised children. We have organised training courses for teachers on active learning, psychological support, and risk, in relation to explosive devices, unexploded devices and mines.

Where water infrastructure has been damaged, WeWorld aims to increase access to drinking water for the most vulnerable through the repair of the infrastructures, the reopening and equipping of water supply points and the promotion of appropriate hygiene practices.
