Ghana suffers from significant economic inequality between the north and south. The three most important cities, Accra the capital, Kumasi and Takoradi, are all in the south. Takoradi is currently experiencing a boom in development due to the recent discovery of oil fields in the area.

Educo's presence is concentrated in the north, near Tamale, and focuses on the problem of child labor. In Ghana, the phenomenon of kayayei is common. Kayayei refers to young people from the north who migrate to the cities in the south in the misguided hope of finding new job opportunities. Instead, what most of them find themselves subject to all types of abuse (sexual, work-related, etc), and a dismal quality of life.
