Burkina Faso has one of the highest rates of chronic malnutrition in Africa, with 15% of children under the age of 5 suffering from a chronic micronutrient deficiency.

WeWorld has worked in Burkina Faso since 1985, working in partnership with families, communities, and health care workers to improve nutritional outcomes for children. This includes training of local health staff; village health campaigns where malnourished children are treated; and constructing new health centres which can care for the most seriously ill children, together with their caregivers.

The most vulnerable families are also provided with economic assistance through cash or food vouchers, which in turn support small traders and local farmers. In 2017 WeWorld was given the Knight of the Order of Merit award by the Grand Chancellery of the Government of Burkina Faso in recognition of our work to strengthen the resilience of the most vulnerable communities and guarantee food security in the regions of the North and of the Sahel.

As a result of the recent political instability, and incursions of radical armed groups in the north of the country,  WeWorld has activated interventions to strengthen the vulnerable communities in the provinces of Soum and Loroum, on the border with Mali. This has included cash transfers, distribution of food products, and ensuring health centres have access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.
