Protection for millions of children: ECOWAS Member States take a huge step forward
On 4 October 2017, the 15 Member States of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) adopted the ECOWAS Strategic Framework for Strengthening National Child Protection Systems to Prevent and Respond to Violence, Abuse and Exploitation against Children in West Africa. In doing so, they committed to concrete measures to protect children from the most damaging forms of abuse, by focusing on five priority areas: sexual, physical and emotional violence against children, including female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C); child marriage; child labour; civil registration and vital statistics; and children on the move.
Implementing the New Commitments to Peace
Dozens of international and domestic peace-building organizations have joined together to release a statement in advance of the International Day of Peace (September 21). The statement calls on the international community and the UN General Assembly to fully embrace the commitments to peace in the 2030 Agenda; balance national efforts with a focus on regional and international drivers of peace, justice and inclusion; mainstream prevention; and protect and support civil society in fostering sustainable peace.

We all must play a role and work together to deliver on our global commitments to protect and enhance human rights and to ensure sustainable development, climate mitigation and adaption, as well as peace and security for everyone, in particular, the most vulnerable. The dreams and aspirations of the founders of the United Nations are yet to be fulfilled. I am looking forward to embarking jointly with you on the path of bringing lasting well-being to humanity.
