ChildFund Alliance welcomes Kevin Hyland as CEO of ChildFund Ireland

ChildFund Alliance is pleased to announce that Kevin Hyland has been appointed the new CEO of ChildFund Ireland, a member of ChildFund Alliance, effective July 30, 2018.

Kevin is a renowned international specialist in the fight against modern slavery and human trafficking. His expertise has been shaped by 30 years’ experience as an officer in London’s Metropolitan Police Service, notably as head of the Human Trafficking Unit.

In 2014, Kevin was named as the UK’s Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner by then-Secretary of State Theresa May. In 2015, Kevin was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in recognition of his outstanding service in combating human trafficking.

“We are thrilled that Kevin Hyland is joining ChildFund Ireland,” said Gerald Doherty, Chairman of the Board of ChildFund Ireland. “Promoting children’s rights and campaigning for policies that protect children around the world is a fundamental aspect of ChildFund’s work. In his role as Commissioner, Kevin has garnered extensive experience as an international advocate for human rights. He has spoken at high-level gatherings and met many influential leaders, including Pope Francis.”

Kevin played a pivotal role in the formation of the Santa Marta Group, a powerful body dedicated to fighting human trafficking. The Group comprises international law enforcement agencies, nongovernmental organizations, civil society organizations and the Church.

Speaking about his new role, Kevin said, “ChildFund’s vision is of a world where children are happy and free to enjoy their childhood. I feel extremely privileged to be appointed as Chief Executive of ChildFund Ireland and to be working alongside such an experienced team in Dublin, and with our colleagues in ChildFund Alliance, to deliver support to children in 63 different countries.

“A lost or stolen childhood can never be replaced. Supporting disadvantaged children to enjoy better education and healthcare opportunities provides them with a more solid base to develop, particularly in their crucial early years, and indeed, to thrive as adults. Providing safe and nurturing environments where children are free from violence and exploitation and their human rights respected, is our priority.

“In our fragile and polarized world, far too many children unnecessarily suffer and it is the duty of the international community to reverse this trend. Ireland, through public generosity, philanthropy and the support of Irish Aid, provides opportunities for development in some of the most disadvantaged and marginalized regions of our world. No child should endure violence, torture, discrimination or exploitation just by virtue of where they are born.

“As Chief Executive of ChildFund Ireland, I am determined and resolute to do all I can with partners in Ireland and internationally, to deliver high quality responses to achieve what should be the right of every child: A world where children are happy and free to enjoy their childhood."

“Kevin Hyland is a welcome addition to ChildFund Alliance, and we are thrilled to welcome him as the CEO of ChildFund Ireland,” said Meg Gardinier, Secretary General of ChildFund Alliance. “His experience in the fight against human trafficking and other human rights issues will be a terrific asset. The members of the Alliance look forward to working with Kevin and learning from his experience.”
