Lack of education is the world's number one poverty risk. This is true in Zambia, where most children go to school, but without ever learning to read, read or do maths. This was confirmed by a study conducted by ChildFund in the project regions of Chibombo and Kafue, where less than 50% of all primary school pupils reach an educational level that enables them to continue to secondary school. Many children finish school prematurely - without graduating.

With the child-friendly school program, ChildFund Deutschland is improving the quality of teaching at ten primary schools.

The reasons for the lack of education are numerous: "The school classes are hopelessly overcrowded and the teachers have given up because of the unacceptable circumstances," says Werner Küpper, head of program work at ChildFund Deutschland. "Many school buildings are neglected because there is no money. There is a lack of books, school benches, sanitation and access to clean drinking water."

The child-friendly school program improves the learning conditions of 7,000 girls and boys. This creates an environment in which children have a desire to learn, to develop self-confidence and to make progress. The result: Higher education quality and fewer early school leavers.

Good teachers contribute decisively to a child-friendly atmosphere. Therefore, 60 teachers are being trained intensively. The focus is on child protection, community teaching and learning, and child-oriented didactic methods. Psychosocial foundations and health topics also play a role. The project work also includes material assistance: dilapidated school buildings are being renovated to include new classrooms and equipped with school furniture. All schools receive sanitary facilities that meet high hygiene standards.
