Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. It has a very low per capita income, a high unemployment rate and very high external debt. The distribution of income is one of the most unequal in the world.
Nicaragua has the worst drinking water and basic sanitation coverage in all of Central America. Inadequate health conditions lead to high rates of child mortality, which is almost always caused by easily preventable diseases.
